Since bedding is what we do best, we thought we'd take a moment to share exactly what she asked and what our founder replied.

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. For example, if a cotton sheet has 150 warp (vertical) threads and 150 weft (horizontal) threads per square inch, its thread count would be 300.

Thread count can indicate fabric quality to some extent, as finer yarn is required for higher thread counts. However, don't be fooled by thread counts of 600 or more, which typically result in overly thick and unventilated fabrics. Many manufacturers also use multiple yarns (two-plied yarn) to deceive customers by showing double the thread count, but according to our laboratory tests and studies, we found that anything over 400 thread counts results in a fabric that lacks breathability.

Thread count is just one factor to consider. Also consider:

1. Is it made from organic materials and free from harsh chemicals?

2. Is it single-ply yarn, or has the thread count been inflated using multi-ply yarn?
3. Are there any technical innovations that enhance fabric performance?
